Zynga tries to reinvent itself with a new smartphone strategy game
In 2008, Mark Skaggs joined Zynga in hopes of making real-time strategy games even more popular. He had spent the previous six years at Electronic Arts, working on games like Command & Conquer, but with Zynga he saw an opportunity to introduce RTS games to a whole new audience. That never happened, though. Facebook turned out to be a poor platform for the genre, and instead Skaggs spent his time working on social gaming hits like CityVille and FarmVille. But now that mobile has emerged as a suitable platform, he's finally doing what he was hired to do with the launch of Empires & Allies on iOS and Android today. "The idea was to take the classic RTS experience and bring it to mobile," he explains.

Facebook is now using Nokia's Here maps ahead of its expected sale
Who will end up buying Here maps from Nokia? That hasn't been sorted out, yet Facebook is apparently not waiting around for a deal to shake out. As TechCrunch notes, Facebook already inked a deal of its own and has begun using Here's maps on the mobile version of its site, as well as in Facebook Messenger and Instagram on Android. Facebook also appears to be using Here's geocoding behind the scenes to help users identify and tag locations in posts. In a statement, Facebook said the change is "to give us more control and flexibility in delivering a consistent maps experience."

Microsoft slams Android updates, claims Google ships a ‘big pile of... code’
Microsoft's Windows chief, Terry Myerson, isn't pulling any punches against Android this week. Speaking during a keynote appearance at Microsoft's Ignite conference in Chicago, Myerson knocked Google's Android update plans. "Google ships a big pile of… code, with no commitment to update your device," Myerson said, with an intentional pause that left the audience laughing. "Google takes no responsibility to update customer devices and refuses to take responsibility to update their devices, leaving end users and businesses increasingly exposed every day they use an Android device."

Comcast brings Periscope-style live streams to the cable box
Comcast is joining Meerkat and Periscope with its own take on a live-streaming app that lets X1 cable subscribers beam live video back to their own TV or the big screen of a friend or family member. Xfinity Share is available beginning today on iOS and Android, though at launch it's limited to Comcast customers paying for a Triple Play package.
Once it's installed, you enter your Xfinity account credentials and tap "stream live" to begin recording. From there, you choose whether the stream will be directed to your own X1 cable box or sent to someone else's. To share live streams with people in your contacts list, you'll need the phone number tied to their Xfinity account. (Recipients will also need the X1 set-top box to view streams.)...
